How firm is your foundation?
We now come to the conclusion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In this final section, the Lord stresses the point that it is not merely the hearing of his teaching, but the doing of it that will establish one’s life as stable and secure amidst the troubles to come.
We are not looking at the two final verses of the chapter, but it is worth noting Matthew’s comment: When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. Jesus’ teaching came with authority. He was not basing his words on other teachers, but on his own wisdom as God Incarnate. That is why we would do well to put his words into practice in our lives, as well.
